A Few Minutes with Stacy Johnson
How did you get into custom home building?
I used to work for a lumber company in Goldsboro. My career began in 1990 after graduating from NCSU with a BS Degree in Wood Science and Technology. Immediately, upon graduating I moved to Memphis, TN and lived for three months where I received my certification in hardwood lumber inspection. I arrived back in NC in the fall of 1990 where I secured a job with Georgia Pacific as a manager trainee. I worked with them for one and a half years before accepting a job as assistant manager of Coastal Lumber Company in Goldsboro, NC. I spent the next 7 years in this position. I was then promoted to manager in 1998. I remained manager until I left in June 2007 to work solely for Johnson Construction Company. While I was manager, I started Johnson Construction. I worked it at night and on the weekends. I left when the load became so great that I could not keep up with the demands of both.
Your houses have some incredible features. How do you come up with these ideas?
I am always looking everywhere I go. I look through a lot of magazines and try to look at as many historical houses as possible. They did great things back then!
What kind of customer experience should be expected when Johnson Construction is initially approached about building a custom home?
Personal attention to the client is a rule. I am the only employee. My wife helps with the books, colors and sometimes the design, but I am what you get. I am here to build a house with you or I can handle the entire project and let you relax. You determine the amount of involvement you want to have.
